Self-love

Know you are equally special

Many people make it to the doctor when they discover a lump in their breast. Jerri Nielsen, M.D., made headlines when she performed a biopsy on herself, diagnosed cancer, and self-administered chemotherapy while stranded at the South Pole, which was inaccessible because it was the dead of winter. She was there performing research and was the only doctor on the continent of Antarctica.

In Ice Bound, Dr. Nielsen wrote about the lessons she discovered as she battled cancer in the darkness of a South Pole winter. One of her most memorable was the equality of everyone who wintered together in the desolation of the South Pole.

Initially, Dr. Nielsen thought the people with “type A” personalities would be the problem-solvers. Living inside during six months of darkness changed her thinking. Dr. Nielsen noted when a type A was “pacing like a lion,” the type B’s calming effect helped the group through the darkness.[i]

Traditional hierarchies disappeared. Each person’s unique gift was critical for survival. In her role as doctor, Dr. Nielsen explained she might help one ailing person feel better. But without the mechanic who serviced the generator, every person could die. Should the generator stop working, the mechanic had two hours to fix it and restore power in temperatures of one hundred degrees below zero.

Every member of the research team was important. No one person was more important, or better, than anyone else.

You and I are part of a team—humanity. The Master Craftsman molds each of us. Each of us is specially made—uniquely created with extraordinary talents—but of equal value to everyone else.
