Self-love

What junk teaches about self-love

Thirty copies of the Declaration of Independence were printed and distributed for review throughout the thirteen colonies. Six of the original thirty were lost, presumably destroyed. Twenty-four original copies remained.

A man bought a painting at a garage sale for five dollars in 1989. He noticed a tear in the back of the painting. Out of curiosity, he removed the painting from its frame and discovered the twenty-fifth original copy of the Declaration of Independence. In 1991, the man sold it during a Sotheby’s auction for $2.1 million. It resold a few years later for $8.1 million.[1]

On the Antiques Road Show, people are often surprised at the appraised value of their “junk.”

Another man who shopped at garage sales every Saturday bought an old painting he liked for fifty dollars. Hard times struck. The man lost his job. Needing to eat more than he needed the painting, he sold it for “lunch money.” The painting, he discovered, was the original work of a renowned painter. The sale price? $1.5 million.[2]

One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. One person’s passion is another person’s frustration. One person’s strength is another person’s weakness.

You were uniquely created with special gifts. Your strengths, the things you love to do, and the things that fill your life with meaning are divinely inspired.

Live as the person you were created to be.
