What a Drowning Person Teaches about Surrendering Control
I shuddered as I dove into the icy water during my first lifesaving class when I was a teenager. The instructor wanted to teach the students how to save a drowning person. I swam like a fish, straight toward the “victim.”
My stint as a would-be hero was brief. The first lesson jolted me as much as the frigid water: I would likely drown with my approach-from-the-front technique. In his panic, the drowning person is likely to grab his rescuer, pull him underwater, and drown both himself and his rescuer. The safer approach for the rescuer is from behind, out of sight, and underwater.
A drowning person often struggles for control—when his path to survival is through surrender.
Similarly, when we are drowning in the mire of self-sufficiency, the graceful path is through surrender.
